The Municipality of Chalkida Took Part in Raising Awareness of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

On the occasion of the World Awareness Month for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in August, the Municipality of Chalkida took part in the nationwide symbolic initiative, with the support of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE), by lighting up the Town Hall – Kotsikas Mansion yesterday, Thursday, August 7, 2025, in the characteristic fuchsia color.

At the same time, the Greek Guiding Association performed a symbolic choreography in front of the Town Hall, reinforcing the day’s message.

For the first time, this day is officially honored in Greece by the newly established SMA HELLAS Association – the first official body representing patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy – and the Municipality of Chalkida stood in solidarity, expressing its support for our fellow citizens living with this rare neuromuscular condition, as well as for the families and organizations who fight daily for awareness, research and the improvement of patients’ quality of life.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare hereditary condition that causes severe muscle weakness and very serious motor disability. Raising awareness in society is essential for early diagnosis, better patient support and the strengthening of the scientific community in its efforts.
